Register for LIT!

Hello Everyone,

We are BEYOND EXCITED to share that The Resource Center Socioeconomic Status and Disability Interns have been working with ReisUP (and our co-sponsors the Adelphic Educational Fund, FGLI Advisory Board, and the Office for Equity and Inclusion) to bring the LIT financial literacy program for first-generation and low-income students to Wesleyan!

Terrified of money?

Confused about taxes?

No idea about insurance?

Wondering about investing?

LIT for Wesleyan has you covered!

LIT was created by a first gen, low-income college grad as a way to empower students like her to take ownership of their financial future. How incredible will it be to have your money questions and concerns addressed by SOMEONE WHO GETS IT !!

The program is totally online and FREE to those who sign up (sign-up link)! Step into and step back from content as you need to over the course of this year to gain the tools and knowledge you need to make decisions now, for summers, and for after graduation!

REGISTRATION IS OPEN NOW THROUGH FEBRUARY 15TH (sign-up link)! This is a pilot program this year to see if Wesleyan students would utilize this program, so there are a limited number of spots.  You can find more information (FAQs, an intro video, etc.) about LIT here.  The program will launch on Feb. 15th, but if we have more spots left- sign-ups can continue throughout the month of February.

We are so happy to be bringing this program to our community!  If you have any questions or concerns about the program or sign-up process, please contact Demetrius Colvin (dcolvin@wesleyan.edu).

Sincerely,

The Resource Center Socioeconomic Status and Disability Interns

Resource Center Reopening Spring 2021

The Resource Center is now closed and will reopen after the Wesleyan quarantine period ends on February 22nd.  Our operational hours at that time will be Sunday-Friday from 12pm-8pm.  Although students are not able to physically check out books from the RC during quarantine, they can virtually reserve and check out books by filling out this form.  You can see what books are available in the library by checking out our catalogue.  You can also check out books from the RC or request a book to be purchased through the FGLI Textbook Fund even if you are studying remotely- we will ship the book to you.  Visit our website (https://www.wesleyan.edu/resourcecenter/programs.html) for more details.

Beyond providing academic supplies, The RC staff is eager to continue engaging with the Wesleyan student body on creating meaningful virtual community spaces for underrepresented and marginalized students.  Follow us on Instagram and Facebook to stay in the loop about our programs, initiatives, and opportunities that can benefit you and our community.  Also check out the Black History Month 2021 calendar on Ujamaa’s Instagram for other great programs to attend this month.  If you have an idea for a program or initiative that would help support underrepresented and marginalized student populations on campus,  please reach out to us therc@wesleyan.edu with your suggestions.  I hope you and your families are doing okay and safe travels to everyone returning to campus!

Sincerely,

-Demetrius

MLK Celebration 2/12 at 12:15

At the start of every Spring semester we come together as a community to honor the civil rights legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  This year’s MLK Commemoration will be held on Friday, February 12th from 12:15 pm -1:15pm on Zoom.  This year our keynote speaker will be Civil Rights activist, organizer, author, and educator, Ruby Sales.

Ruby Nell Sales looks at her work as a calling rather than a career. She answered the call to social justice as a teenager at Tuskegee Institute where she joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and worked on voter registration in Lowndes County, Alabama.  Sales received a B.A. degree from Manhattanville College and attended graduate school at Princeton University.  Sales received a Masters of Divinity degree from the Episcopal Divinity School where she was an Absalom Jones Scholar. While there, she developed a reputation as a preacher and has preached at churches and cathedrals around the nation.  After divinity school, she founded and still directs a national nonprofit organization, the SpiritHouse Project (http://www.spirithouseproject.org/).

This is event is sponsored by The Resource Center, Office for Equity and Inclusion, Department of African-American Studies and the Center for African-American Studies, Fries Center for Global Studies, and the Wesleyan Library.  If you have any questions about the event, please don’t hesitate to contact Demetrius Colvin at dcolvin@wesleyan.edu.

Withdrawal Deadline 11/24

The deadline to withdraw from full-semester and second-quarter classes for the Fall 2020 semester is Tuesday, November 24 at 5:00 p.m EST.  If you need to withdraw from a course, please send a group email to the instructor, your faculty advisor, and your class dean, and attach a withdrawal form.

If you are thinking about withdrawing from a course:

  • Do use this time to talk to your professors, your advisors, and your class dean about your concerns.
  • Do make sure you are taking advantage of all the resources available to you.
  • Do not wait until Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. to seek advice from your instructor, advisor, or dean because you probably won’t hear back from them until after the deadline has passed.
